businesses and projects which are helping the local community during lockdown

The coronavirus pandemic has placed the UK in lockdown. As a result of this, many businesses are closed until further notice, with little idea about what the future might hold. However, this hasn’t stopped enterprises in areas like Rotherhithe, Tower Bridge and London Bridge from working together to keep residents healthy and happy.

Here are just a few of the companies working hard to provide for the local community.

Keeping residents physically healthy

Physical health is a big concern for many Londoners, especially as some of the parks have been shut to prevent social gatherings, and green space to exercise in is limited. Some local companies are offering great ways to maintain a good level of fitness, even when you’re confined to your home.

For example, Fitness First in London Bridge are broadcasting exercise classes every day at 11am, to provide regular fitness sessions for people at home.

Mental health matters

Mental wellbeing is just as important as physical fitness. Self-isolating is particularly difficult for those who live alone, especially those who are already vulnerable, such as the elderly.

Time & Talents in Rotherhithe are focused on keeping in touch (safely) with older people in self-isolation, ensuring that they don’t feel lonely, and delivering food packages to them. If you’d like to offer your help, you can register your interest here.

Some of the most vulnerable people in the community are the homeless. Businesses like Kitchen and Brigade Bar have been working hard to feed those who are living on the streets, via food donations.

Cultural boost

Many local residents are missing their usual entertainment; such as meeting with friends or going to the theatre. Although there’s no safe way to watch a live performance at the moment, some local theatres are offering the next best thing – an online performance in the comfort of your own home.

The Unicorn Theatre on Tooley Street is a great example – check out their website to find out what shows are currently available to watch. The Old Operating Theatre museum also has some online content to keep you amused during this time.

Feeding the community

Our local food suppliers and supermarkets are doing an incredible job of feeding residents during lockdown. The great news is that you don’t have to go without your weekly take-away, as many restaurants are offering a delivery service during lockdown.

Some have even gone the extra mile, with online cookery lessons to show you how to create your own culinary masterpieces while you’re self-isolating. Rosa’s Thai and The Real Greek are great examples.

Supporting the NHS

There’s no doubt about it; NHS workers have been the real heroes during the COVID-19 situation. Businesses of all kinds have been getting behind the NHS, such as CJS Plants, who donated close to 2,000 plants to the staff at Guy’s and St Thomas Hospital recently.

Additionally, bicycle repair shop Nip Nip are providing NHS workers with free repairs, and restaurants such as Pizza Pilgrims and Tower Tandoori have been donating food to the hard-working staff at the hospital.
