Why Should You Invest in Bermondsey Property?

Why Should You Invest in Bermondsey Property?

by Hastings International

Bermondsey was badly bombed during the Second World War, but you’ll find no hangovers from the devastation these days. Instead, you’ll discover a location that prides itself on its Thames-side location and ability to offer residents a vibrant, varied social life.

If you’re considering buying a property in Bermondsey, here are a few more details to whet your appetite.

It’s a Foodie Haven

Whether you’re investing in property for yourself or as a buy-to-let, it’s useful to know that there’s plenty in the area to keep you entertained. Bermondsey has long been associated with food and drink, and these days residents like to frequent the cafes in the arches near Druid Street, or one of the many restaurants in Bermondsey Square. There are also plenty of highly regarded pubs and bars, which is useful if you’re planning to rent to young professionals.

Plenty to Do

Bermondsey also has a thriving cultural scene, with The Scoop at City Hall showcasing regular theatre and dance performances throughout the year. A short stroll away, residents will discover several other theatres, including The Unicorn, the Menier Chocolate Factory and Southwark Playhouse. There’s also a fiercely independent cinema in Bermondsey, though with only 52 seats, booking is advisable.

Schools

Bermondsey has got a good range of local schools; with several rated either ‘outstanding’ or ‘good’ by Ofsted. St Mary Overy and The Cathedral School of St Saviour are particularly noteworthy, as are St Michael’s Catholic College and Harris Academy Bermondsey.

Two further secondary schools recently opened in Bermondsey – Compass Free School, and the University Academy of Engineering, which is sponsored by London South Bank University. Both serve to illustrate just how popular the area is becoming with families.

Good Connections

Not only is Bermondsey a stone’s throw from some of London’s most popular locations, it’s also well connected when it comes to public transport. London Bridge station is the first option and is on both the Northern and Jubilee line. Bermondsey station is on the Jubilee line, and South Bermondsey is on the rail network, connecting travellers to London Bridge.

Additionally, there are excellent bus services in operation throughout the week.

Properties in Bermondsey

There is a huge range of property styles in Bermondsey. Demand is high for apartments, which is unsurprising, given how popular the area is with young professionals who work in Central London.

However, there are also plenty of attractive period terraced properties on the market, and some converted ex-industrial buildings. If you’re looking for one of these, make sure you visit Shad Thames, where you’ll find some impressive riverside warehouse conversions with exposed brickwork, iron beams and more.

There are also several new developments in Bermondsey, which is perfect for buyers who’d rather purchase a new-build than an older property.

Rental Market

If you’re thinking of buying a property to let, you’ll be pleased to know that the rental market is strong in this area. Many city workers choose to live in Bermondsey because of its proximity to Central London, so as such, rental properties seldom sit empty for long, and they tend to offer landlords a solid rental yield.
