Living in Camberwell – the lowdown

Fantastic period properties, easy proximity to Central London, a thriving cultural scene – when it comes to offering a good standard of living, Camberwell is hard to beat.

Although it doesn’t have its own tube station, it’s not too far to Denmark Hill station, which is in Zone 2. From here, commuters can reach London Victoria station in around 10 minutes. There are also several commuter-buses, taking travellers across the city.

In fact, Camberwell is only three and a half miles from Central London, making it easy to access the West End, the main shopping districts, and most of the other attractions in the capital.

What are the properties like?

Camberwell is well-known for its excellent architecture. You’ll find some superb examples of Georgian properties around Camberwell Grove and Camberwell New Road, with many retaining their period features.

The Edwardian semi-detached homes are also popular, particularly with families. These properties sometimes come with driveways and gardens, which makes them especially appealing. In the Ruskin Park area, you’ll find some 1930s semi-detached and detached homes, which often have spacious living areas.

Nightlife in Camberwell

Being this close to Central London, it’s easy to get on a train and head into the city. However, if you want to enjoy an evening closer to home, there’s plenty to do in Camberwell. The Crooked Well is a much-loved gastropub, and Grove House is good for cocktails with friends. The Sun of Camberwell is another lively local pub, and is well worth visiting.

Schools in the area

Camberwell is popular with families, as there are some excellent schools in the area. Sacred Heart Catholic School is in the middle of Camberwell, and Crawford Primary, Saint Gabriel’s College and Comber Grove Primary are all also very accessible – which is great if you’re looking for an easy school-run each morning.

The area has some great local shops; many of which are situated on or around Denmark Hill. You’ll find plenty of high street stores here, not to mention some great independent shops too, like Jim Dandy Vintage or Cowling & Wilcox, a well-known haunt for artists living in Camberwell.
